FINANCE houses set out to be monuments of stone and steel. In the widening gyre the greatest of them have splintered into matchwood. Ten short days saw the nationalisation, failure or rescue of what was once the world’s biggest insurer, with assets of $1 trillion, two of the world’s biggest investment banks, with combined assets of another $1.5 trillion, and two giants of America’s mortgage markets, with assets of $1.8 trillion. The government of the world’s leading capitalist nation has been sucked deep into the maelstrom of its most capitalist industry. And it looks overwhelmed. [economist.com]

Tunisian authorities allowed Jean-Pierre Raffarin a first peek at their privatization program for this year. Tunisia’s hopes for the sell-off to try to save the heavily-indebted companies !

No less than 24 companies or entities will be “offered” to the frenchies. Some are of great interest such as the sale of a 33.54% stake in Tunisia’s Banque du Sud, BNP Paribas wanted to merge Banque de Sud with the Union Bancaire du Commerce et de l’Industrie scared off the authorities.

Tunisian government stakes will be sold in the Skanes Palace International, Hotel Boujaafar Sousse, Sousse Palace and Residence Club Skanes. 76.3% of Magasin General will also be sold. Societe Tuniso-Algerienne de Ciment Blanc, Societe Nationale de Distribution de Produits Petroliers (35% of its equity), the Societe Tunisienne de l’Industrie des Pneus (51.9%), Societe Tunisienne d’Industrie Automobile, Societe Tunisienne de l’Industrie Laitiere (80%), Societe Tunisienne du Platre and Societe Tunisienne des Industries Electriques et Mecaniques…

It seems that the entire Tunisia is for sale, to the french major corporations !

And is there in France people tell about US imperialism…?

UPDATE:

TIMELEC, a French export company belonging to the Socomec group, has set up operations in the industrial zone of Chebedda in Tunisia. Nief Plastique that works with Timelec, has done likewise.

Following his recent meeting with Kadhafi, Democrat senator Joseph Biden, a highly influential member of the Senate’s foreign relations committee, said the Libyan leader ?

“Is the most intelligent man I have ever met.”

But sure ! What a (free) compliment :

With active backing from Saif El Islam, son of Muammer Kadhafi, Abdallah Badri (Morocco’s leading oil official) and prime minister Shukri Ghanem have managed to push through an American takeover of a good chunk of Libya’s oil industry !!!

Out of 15 new blocks awarded in a licensing round, 11 went to American operators, principally to Occidental Petroleum (nine in all, four of them in conjunction with Australia’s Woodside) but also to Amerada Hess Corp (one) and Chevron (one). Others awarded acreage were Petrobras (Brazil), Medco (Indonesia), India Ltd., Verenex Energy Inc (Canada) and Sonatrach (Algeria).

European’s majors like Gaz de France, Total, Repsol, BP and Agip went away empty-handed. Luckier in March when a second round will be staged ?

It’s very strange to see that is there no Italian company, Italy government has very good relationship with Kadhafi from the last year, maybe more interested about resolve emigration problems than get some oil…

- American televangelist Josh McDowell, were invited in Morocco by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, with more than 7000 converted in Morocco the audience would be enough for the American super star.
- The US Department of Agriculture comes with a 20 million $ guarantees for loan to purchase products “made in the USA”.

Now…

- There is in Morocco more than 150 evangelist missionaries – an ideological supports of George W. Bush – which they would aim to “Christianize” 10 % of the population before the year 2020.

Hope they target well where to “Christianize” because it seems like Islamic extremism is growing all over the country. Just meet them and maybe they will try to “Islamize” !

A nice country where 6000 Europeans (1% of Kenya population) holds 25% of agricultural land, it was just after the second war. Now thanks to the corrupted Kenyan government all Ministers acquire hectares and hectares of coffee, tea, cereals plantation. Ok they are Kenyans and white people do not hold any more lands in a country where government prefers maintain chaos and deal easy with US and Europeans companies more than build up a real democracy. Del Monte is one of the best clients in the country…

Ministers whose came to power in 2003 use justice corruption to steal farms and lands, but not in the Nairobi’s 143 shantytowns where young people has no jobs and live with one dollar a day, many of them handles pistols and do their own laws.

In fact the Kenya Land Alliance report that half of agricultural land are hold by 20% of the population. Ex boss arap Moi and mafia family such as the Kenyatta holds property respectively about 114.600 and 221.600 acres. Not bad the Rift Valley!
